Laser Engraved Pokémon Bookmarks – Squirtle Squad Style!

Shinthaw here from Purely Laser Engraved, I wanted to share one of my latest side projects that mixes my love of lasers, nostalgia, and a bit of colour—the Squirtle Squad bookmarks!

These laser-engraved wooden bookmarks were a blast to make and are perfect for anyone who wants to level up their reading game with a bit of Pokémon flair.

🔥 The Idea

I’ve always been a fan of the Squirtle Squad—the shades, the attitude, the throwback vibes. So I thought, why not turn that into a bookmark? Each one features a Poké Ball up top and Squirtle rocking his signature shades down below. Fun, functional, and full of character.

🪵 Materials & Tools

  • Laser: Creality Falcon Pro 10W
  • Material: 3mm birch plywood
  • Paint Pens:
    • Archer & Olive Acrylograph paint pens
    • Needab acrylic paint pens

I used both brands across different bookmarks to test out their colours. The Needab pens really stood out with bolder, more vibrant colours—especially that bright blue! The Acrylograph pens gave a softer finish, which works well for more pastel or muted designs.

🛠️ The Process

In the photo, you can see the bookmarks at four different stages:

  1. Plain engraved – No fill, just clean laser detailing.
  2. Lightly sanded – Still raw, but ready for colour.
  3. Coloured in – Black background, red and white Poké Ball, and a fully painted Squirtle.
  4. Final detail – Deeper colours and extra shading for that polished finish.

I masked each piece before engraving for sharp paint lines, then peeled and painted using the pens. Finally, a light spray lacquer sealed it all in.

💡 Tips If You Want to Try This

  • Mask first, then engrave – Cleaner paint lines.
  • Test your pens – Different brands = different results!
  • Use multiple layers – Especially for brighter or lighter colours.
  • Seal it – Protects the design and gives a finished feel.

They’re fast to make, fun to customise, and perfect for scrap wood projects. Plus, who doesn’t love Squirtle with shades?
