Laser Engraving Denim: My First Custom Jacket Project
By 3D Prints with Shin
When I first started experimenting with laser engraving, I mostly stuck to leather and the odd t-shirt. But I’ve always loved the idea of customizing clothing—especially something with a bit of attitude. So I finally decided to give denim a proper go.
This Foo Fighters–inspired back patch is the result—and honestly, I’m blown away by how it turned out.
The Inspiration
I’ve always been into rock music, so creating a piece that felt personal and band-worthy made sense. I already had a killer logo design featuring skulls, wings, and roses, and thought, “Why not turn it into a back patch?”
Gear & Settings
Laser Engraver: Creality Falcon Pro 10W
Material: Plain denim jacket (no pre-treatment)
Software: LightBurn
Settings: 3000 mm/min speed, 20% power
Design Positioning: Centered across the back panel, no masking or taping—just placed flat and secure
Engraving Process
I went in without any pretreatment—just laid the jacket down, made sure it was as flat as possible, and started the burn.
Even at just 20% power, the design engraved beautifully. The laser pulled out strong detail without scorching or damaging the fabric too deeply. The result? A bold, crisp graphic that looks and feels like it belongs there.
Protecting the Design
To help the engraved area survive the washing machine, I ordered some Scotchgard Fabric Water Shield. It’s a clear spray that protects without stiffening the fabric, and once it's fully cured, it should help lock in the design.
I’ll be doing a follow-up blog after the jacket’s first wash to share how well it held up!
Final Thoughts
This was my first proper go at clothing engraving, and it won’t be the last. Denim works surprisingly well with laser engraving, and with the right design and settings, the results are seriously impressive.
If you’ve got a laser engraver and an old denim jacket lying around—give it a shot. Just be warned… you’ll want to engrave everything after.
